LAI Wei-yu

In addition to visual artistic creations, Lai Wei-yu is also committed to music performance. As he has worked with musicians from different parts of the world, he got to know musicians of different nationalities. In this stationing, Lai’s thought was centered on the relationship between the site and artists, rethinking the legitimacy of the behaviors and words of the artists, who were foreigners of a short-term existence, in an unfamiliar environment. Then, he decided to transfer the "privilege" of an "artist-in-stationing" to a good friend whom he met with music – the Filipino singer Risa. He let the voicing right be returned to the community itself so that he would become just the listener. As he went backstage, he helped Risa and two other Jazz players, James and Enzo, to perform in Jinwanwan.

On Oct 15, a Saturday afternoon with torrential rain, “Risa & Friends” warmed up the corridor in Jinwanwan. Everybody was singing and dancing, a moment in which barriers and boundaries between ethnicities, performers, audience, and creators were nonexistent.

Being a professional artist slashed diatonic harmonica player, Lai Wei-yu usually fuses his own aesthetic and cultural awareness into the harmonica performance. Consciously, he embodies the instrument as the carrier of the noises that appear in this piece of land. Thus, Lai is also keen on the promotion of diatonic harmonica in Taiwan, including teaching, lectures, workshops, and others. Meanwhile, he is also advancing in his art creations in all different forms…
